We were looking for a restaurant that A's aunt and uncle and my parents would all enjoy, and since Bali Brasserie came with many good reviews, we headed off to try some Indonesian and Malaysian food. The restaurant is in a strange location, but once you make your way through what looks like the lobby of an apartment building, you come into a karaoke bar area and then through that is a surprisingly nicely decorated restaurant in the back. There was an option for a buffet dinner, but we decided to go a la carte as no one was hungry enough to do justice to a buffet. We ordered so many dishes it is hard to remember them all, but the beef rendang, sambal udang, ikan lemak and nasi goreng stood out. I'd definitely go back here - the atmosphere was buzzy but not too loud, and the food ranged from very good to absolutely amazing. A great way to introduce everyone to each other over a fabulous meal.
F was itching to try out his new pestle and mortar so A and I were invited over for dinner. F made this beef rendang recipe, which was quite tasty but I think we all agreed could do with some tweaks. Some extra chili, more finely ground lemongrass and perhaps some extra salt and longer cooking times could all help? The coconutty sauce was really good with the rice - I was making sure to scrape up all the sauce I could. Hopefully F will want to experiment some more with the pestle and mortar, since this was a delicious first dish.

So while a few of us (including K) were visiting Y, we had the chance to order from her local Indonesian restaurant. Since Y is Indonesian, we let her do all the ordering and a feast showed up. Apparently this place makes home style Indonesian food. All I know is that it was absolutely fantastic. My favorite dish was the rendang padang, described as tender beef simmered in coconut and chili sauce. There was also Kari Terong, sauteed eggplant in curry sauce, Nasi Goreng Tahu Telor, Indonesian fried rice with veggies, eggs and tofu, Sate Ayam, Indonesian barbecue chicken with peanut sauce, and Udang Goreng Isi, stuffed prawn with spicy sweet and sour sauce (Y, correct me if I got any of these wrong!). Accompanied by white rice and onion crackers (like prawn crackers but with an onion flavor instead), we stuffed ourselves silly. I need to find an Indonesian restaurant in London. Anyone have any suggestions?
